So… After much talk, deliberation, angst, confusion and other nonsense associated with a major career decision, I’ve finally made up my mind - for now. I shall - using the brass’ own words - “do what the company asks”. I’ve been lucky, or so they tell me, because the company wanted many things for me.

In the end I declined several attractive offers to focus my efforts on performance and talent management. This should keep me busy for at least the next 6-9 months.

The deal I concocted is quite simple. I’m expected to be available in Bonn 3 days a week. The other two days can be spent either working from home or from our office in Brussels.

This arrangement suits me just fine since its a minimal disruption to my homelife. Sure, my wife is not overjoyed at the idea of me spending two nights a week away from home but she supports me nonetheless. And I have to say she’s been a good sport all along: keeping me motivated, looking at her options in Bonn should we move there etc.

When all is said and done, this is probably an opportunity for me. For now I’m still blinded by the “fog of war”, but this will subside and hopefully my decision was the right one.

If only one could bestow the faculty of 20/20 foresight…
